Community comes first for the Trails at Newcastle

Submitted by Rose Egge on Friday, February 26th, 03:12pm

Ben Kaufman, owner of Greenworks Realty and Development Group knows that the days of, “if you build it, they will come” don't apply to today's market.

For the past few years while the real estate market was booming, Kaufman was busy applying for permits and educating the City staff and city council about community design and low impact development practices. He is developer for the Trails at Newcastle, a Built Green village. After six years developing the concept and applying for permits, the project team aims to break ground this summer.

Kaufman says, “My goal for the Trails community is to be an inspiring, triple-bottom line project—one that is beneficial for people, the planet, as well as profitable.”

The following public informational meetings will be held on this project:

  • Feb. 27, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Newcastle YMCA
  • Mar. 1, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Private Residence Beaux Arts
  • Mar. 14, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Newcastle YMCA

City could combine summer community events

Submitted by Rose Egge on Monday, February 22nd, 03:57pm

This year, the city only has $10,000 budgeted for community events--compared to $30,000 last year--and no dedicated Special Events staff.

As a result city council is considering combining Newcastle days and community concerts into one event to celebrate the 4th of July. This is not confirmed yet, and community members are still encouraged to share their own ideas.

The Golf Club at Newcastle is still planning to host free, outdoor movies and several sponsors from last year are interested in contributing this year.

If you want to comment on Newcastle's community events e-mail your council members.
